This week we went on most likely our last date in Washington as Washington residents.
We had a lovely dinner over the Snoqualmie Falls and talked about our next season in life. I find that saying "goodbyes" are deeply important. Though leaving WA will be different in many ways than leaving CA.

Here are some memories of Washington. Goodbye, Evergreen State! We hope to be back soon.

-Viewing majestic Mt. Rainer 2 or 3 out of 5 days
-Elizabeth saying, "It's like we're in Alaska!" every night during the summer because the sun didn't set til 10pm and the sun rose at 4:30am.
-Long bike rides down the P-town river
-Our home almost being flooded
-Our home almost being burned
-Shea accepting Notre Dame's great offer
-Elizabeth's first surgery
-Commuting to and from work with the soldiers from Fort Lewis
-Spending lots of time with our military friends
-The Dept. of Veteran's Affairs
-Shea's ridiculously good view from his office

-attending a Charismatic Episcopal service
-taking 2 months to find a home church
-Disorientation on Elizabeth's part on May 1st...not knowing why the sun had not come out

Shea and Elizabeth have had a great February so far.
Elizabeth's knee has been progressively healing and she is now able to do a good bit of the kind of exercising that she was prior to her surgery...now without pain. So, thanks to Dr. Heusch, we were able to start bike riding again (5 miles at go #1), and she's already started using the elliptical.

Shea has been accepted to 1 graduate program already and we are both praying for direction and guidance in the weeks ahead as more decisions are made.

We love the Northwest...even on its bitingly crisp days.

Last night we celebrated Shea's sister's birthday in Bellevue, WA ... kind of like Irvine, CA. They have a "drum parade" in which high-school age drummers perform on the street to Christmas songs with coordinating lights, etc. It felt a lot like Disneyland, which was lovely. The first snow of the season began falling during that parade and we drove home in fast-falling chunks of snow. This morning we work up to a light dusting of white over our view of the Puyallup River. It's supposed to stay below freezing for the next week, so we're bundled up! We think to ourselves that this is nothing compared to our friends living near Chicago or our friends in Toronto. :)

So, I must say....that the crispness of western WA has not been too much for us yet! We slid from Fall to winter smoothly and now typically have nights that reach freezing and days that barely reach 50 degrees. I've put in pictures of our backyard from summer to fall to winter. The last picture is of our backyard at sunrise, as I'm leaving to go to work.

We got our first real tree and discovered that an 8' tree can, indeed, be tied to the top of a Camry. :)

I grew up seeing pictures of trees turning red, orange, and yellow. I have always associated fall with briskness in the air, pumpkin pie spices, and awaiting Advent. On this last week of October, I am struck with the beauty that 60% of the trees around Puyallup are deciduous. On the exit that I take to get off the freeway coming home from work, every-other tree is an evergreen and so there is yellow-green striping lining the off-ramp for 1/4 mile.

Today, I took the long way to get to our nearest Trader Joe's (17 miles away). With it, I took a 2-lane avenue that was covered with yellow leaves on the ground and yellow leaves on the trees lining it. I thought to myself, "I don't ever want Fall to end! These colors are amazing!" And then I realized something...this was the first time in over 10 months that I actually enjoyed driving. Since the accident that I was in in Chicago last January, I have seen driving in the car as something to be avoided if at all possible. Today was the first day I saw beauty in it.

So, I think I do want seasons to change. Some seasons in our life have been much harder than others, but I am learning that seasons change and that there is beauty in ones to come, as there is in the one we are living in. My reflections today lead me to be mindful of having a grateful heart about the things that God has put into my life for this season. I am grateful to be in Puyallup for this year. I am grateful to be an image of God's compassion, love, and healing in so many vet's and active-duty soldier's lives. I am grateful to be coming up on 3 1/2 years of marriage to a psychologically stable, healthy, joyful, strong, wise, and gentle husband. I am grateful.

We spent the past 2 weekends with our families at Whidbey Island in WA then in LA, respectively. The dissertation is defended and now we are settling back into our cozy home in Puyallup.
And, yes...that is the coyote that wakes us up in the morning with its barks. Puyallup is definitely not Orange County. :)

Northwest Trek Wildlife Park

So...we live in a really cool area of WA. It's definitely NOT in the city, and for that, it is a relaxing place to live. We discovered a wildlife preserve 17 miles from our home. It houses animals in 400+ acres that are native to the northwest. Here are some fantastic animals that we saw. The last picture is of our wonderful Mt. Rainier. We have such a beautiful view of it. Of late, my colleagues have challenged me to think more deeply about marriage and if it is any different than domestic partnership. I thank them for this because it has pushed me to think more carefully and truthfully about the vows that I made to my husband over 3 years and 3 months ago.

In domestic partnership, one can own a home and cars together. One can be the beneficiary of the other's life insurance. Two partners can raise children together. Love can be deeply present and uniting.

A difference between domestic partnership and the Christian marriage that I am a part of is that I vowed before God and my community that I would love this man in sickness and in health, for richer or for poorer, for better or for worse, to love and to cherish him for as long as I live. I vowed before God and man to love him, comfort him, honor and keep him and forsaking all others, keep only unto him as long as we both shall live. I vowed that I would let nothing take my love away from Shea.

As a believer and follower of God, I know that marriage was made as a picture of the Creator and Groom's love for us, his people and bride. The marriage is sacred because of this, and not because of an intensity of love or it being something acknowledged by the state.

A husband left on a trip to go far away to provide for his bride of three years. When his wife arrived home to the empty house, she found small notes placed strategically around the house. In them he wrote of the things he cherished about her, things only a husband could write to his wife, and how he was going to come back soon.

This is a picture of God's love for us. This is a picture of marriage.

We took a train back into London and spent our last 24 hours there. The first bit was spent in our hotel room with a bag of ice on Elizabeth's knee because she tore her ACL (not a complete rupture). However, we were up to be around London enough to see Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, and a few pieces of art by Leonardo di Vinci and Michelangelo on the National Gallery.

The third and my favorite part of this trip was our 3-day hiking tour of the Wye River. Our friend, Melissa, recommended this part of the trip to us and it was quite striking.

Our first day in the countryside was in Brockhampton. We stayed in the Ladyridge Farm Guesthouse and we HIGHLY recommend it to anyone who wants to take a taxi to a remote area of the English countryside...where there are no grocery stores because everyone buys their produce from the surrounding farms. Here are pictures from the farm that we stayed on. In the picture with the llama, there is a thatched-roof church in the background that is one of 3 remaining thatched churches in England.

In the edge of the farm's property line was the "Golden Valley" (as popularized in the movie "Shadowlands" depicting C.S. Lewis' life). Amazing. Also amazing was an ancient Roman encampment across the way that was used by the Romans from 500 B.C. to 200 A.D. The Roman encampment picture has the partridge in the middle of it. The final picture of this segment is the view from our guest room.

Our first day of long hiking involved near 17 miles, 7 hours, and no sitting. We started our hike along the Wye River at the cathedral of Hereford. We hiked through cow, sheep, & horse pastures, through apple orchards, and farm fields. Here are pictures from that magnificent hike.

Sign posts became our angels and guides on not-very-well marked miles of path. As you can see, by the end of our hike, we felt pretty victorious that we conquered the hike. :)

Our second day of hiking was just as beautiful, albeit repetitive as we got turned around a bit. Here are some pictures from that 2nd day of hiking.

We spent our last day in the countryside in Hay-on-Wye, Wales...a little town known for its 39 used bookstores. Here are pictures from that town, a view from our guest room, me eating my favorite: scones and devonshire cream, and the amazingly elvish Welsh language!

So...after we spent time in lovely, cultured, intricate Oxford, we took a train to Manchester, England. Manchester is most likely to be known to us Yanks for its football (soccer) team Manchester United. We were there for Shea to work at a conference for his work. I (Elizabeth)spent a lot of time in the museums there and just resting. The most memorable part of being in Manchester was that the UEFA cup final took place in Manchester's football stadium. This included 250,000 Scotsmen invading the city to cheer for their team.

Our UK vacation had roughly 4 sections to it:

To get from London to Oxford, we took some subways and a train...2 forms of transportations that were a first for me (Elizabeth). Shea led the way to his favorite places around Oxford and we were once again so deeply happy to be around scholasticism and beauty. We went up to the top of St. Mary's Cathedral and overlooked the city.

Even though it was a bit warm when we were there, we couldn't resist having tea and scones (all handmade!) at the Rose. Thank you, Mom, for that gift! :)

Shea then valiantly punted down the River Cherwell with me in the boat. It was really fun once we got the hang of it. That evening we walked to a lovely pub on the Thames for dinner.

Shea and I walked the walks around Christ Church college and Magdelan college (the college where C.S. Lewis taught at). Here are some pictures from those quiet, lush strolls.

We visited the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. It was the first public museum in Europe. Pictured here are Elizabeth sizing herself up to her Greek ancestors and the first seals of Oxford (1249 A.D.).

Being proud pass-holders at Disneyland, we took some pictures by the annual delights: the ever-changing color of the letters of "California" outside of Disney's California Adventure, Sleeping Beauty's castle decked out in blue lights, and the huge Christmas tree on Main Street.

We were able to go on our 3rd annual Thanksgiving Vacation. This year, we went to Santa Barbara and enjoyed the delights of crisp air, a beautiful ocean, a clean outdoor mall, and Black Friday sales without the craziness or early mornings.

The last hurtle has been cleared and now it's a long wait to find out if my time was good enough to finish the race this academic year.

Okay, enough with the analogy. I finished my 17th and final internship application tonight!!! Now I wait for interview invitations, and then I will find out in late February if I get an internship this year and where it will be. This stretch from May to now has been a constant sprint, with my feet stumbling under me many times.

These internship applications totaled more than 1000 pieces of paper, 6 printer cartridges, and a whole lot of postage!

At this point I feel peace about what God will bring into our lives. It could be such a variety of things. Wow. I'm finally done. Four years ago when I began my doctoral program, I could never have imagined that I would actually get through my comprehensive exams, professional qualifying exams, and write dozens of essays for internship applications. But...I am at this point only through God's grace...

Tomorrow I'm taking the day off and going to Disneyland.

Summer Vacation - part 4

Part 4

So, after adventures in LA, we were off for more adventures in San Francisco. Let's just point out now that San Francisco was a lovely 20-30 degrees cooler than LA. We really needed a break from the heat!

We went to San Francisco for the annual American Psychological Association (APA) Convention (it's the BIG one). Some of my research was accepted and I presented it in poster form there. So, we stayed on the 16th floor of the Hilton in downtown San Francisco (thank you for the funding, Rosemead!) and had a blast exploring downtown San Francisco. While I was in sessions, Shea got a chance to do some of what he likes best - reading quietly in cool places.

Picture #1: A good friend of mine was there and we go to go to some sessions together and our poster presentations ended up being the same hour on the same row of exhibits.

So, Shea & I run together a lot, but we've never been in a race together before. So, when I found out that there was a 5K "Running Psychologists" race/run by the Golden Gate Bridge , we couldn't wait to sign up!

Summer Vacation - part 3

Part 3

What would a vacation be without great animals?? That's what we thought, and so we headed off to the LA Zoo.

Picture #1: One of the first things that Elizabeth did, after jumping up and down with excitement at being at the newly renovated zoo, was to find a place where she could pet an animal...which happened to be a snake. (Shea did too, after her).

Picture #2: Shea's favorite animal in 4th grade was the ocelot because it was a cool wildcat. Well, we certainly found one at the zoo, and eating its prey, no less!

Picture #3: Shea's a great map interpreter. Elizabeth can read maps, but sometimes has trouble interpreting them. :) We make a great team.

Picture #4: There was a fun and stunning spider exhibit. I think that they put in this specific spider to keep the kids less scared. :)

Summer Vacation - part 2

Part 2

Next, we went to the Griffith Observatory! I (Elizabeth) have been wanting to do this with Shea since we began dating in 2002, but it was closed for 4 years for renovations. It is finally open now, and boy! was it worth the wait. Our understanding of the cosmos was widened and God's greatness is now understood a little more by us. There was a grand planetarium show, and among many things, we got to look through a 12" telescope at Jupiter and its 4 moons. We now are able to navigate by the stars a little better, thanks to an incredibly enthusiastic and intelligent astronomer's help, and we also got to rub shoulders with Einstein. Lastly, the view from the Observatory, which seems to be near the highest point in LA proper, was astounding. If you're ever in LA, this is definitely a place to visit.

Summer Vacation - part 1

Our vacation this summer was a unique concoction of long-found joys and new adventures. We spent the first part of our 6-day vacation in (of all places) Los Angeles! A great opportunity for Shea, teaching a class session at the Torrey Honors Institute at Biola, which landed in the middle of our original camping reservation dates. So, we decided to stay local for 3 days and enjoy the beauties and classiness of LA. We had three great day trips: The first was to the Getty Art Museum in Los Angeles. The second was a trip to the Griffith Observatory in LA, and the third was to the LA Zoo.

The last 3 days of our vacation were centered around a road trip to San Francisco (thank you for helping pay for this, Rosemead!) to the 115th Annual American Psychological Association Convention. - See post #4 for more information. :)

Part 1

The Getty is so beautiful architecturally on its own. Shea and I both are amateur art appreciators and love spending what time we have reflecting on beauty and what an artist is communicating through his/her work. Some of the highlights for us this time around at the Getty were Manet's A Bar at the Folies-Bergère, in which we discussed for probably an hour! (it's a deep painting), the collection of Oudry's animal paintings, and the beautiful LA skyline.

We then went down to Belmont Shores beach and had a great picnic dinner, overlooking massive ships in the port.

This weekend, we had an incredible vacation on the beaches of southernmost Orange County. We got some new gear to help us in our boogie-boarding and enjoyed hours reading on the beach. One night, we had the pleasure of watching a fisherman bring in his boat from the ocean. It was so amazing to see the fringes of the glory of God's creation.

Shea returned last night from a 6-day (including travel) trip to Nice, France for an European online education conference. Apart from a minimalist hotel room, lots of city construction, and standing for 10 hours at a time, Shea also got to see a little bit of Riviera beauty, and as I (Elizabeth) like to say, “Vive la Mediterranean!”

The pictures below came from the old quarter of Nice and its beautiful Mediterranean coastline. It is easy to imagine this beach flooded with tourists during the summer months.

Since Nice is such a tourist city, most people spoke enough English so Shea wasn’t in a bind for communicating. However, he does have some funny stories, so be sure to ask him about those.

As you can see, Nice had some very big, ugly modern art throughout the city…such a contrast to the beautiful cathedrals, opera house, and coastline!

I think that this trip truly enforced how much we want to see more of the Mediterranean Sea together- specifally the Greek Isalnds…. hopefully after Rosemead lets me go with a degree.

We got the chance to celebrate the life of the first, newborn child of our friends. We rejoice with this new life and the family this little one was born into. There is a lot of ugliness in the world, but God allows us to have beautiful, vibrant friends who love God and their child with all their hearts. What a blessing to be a part of the good and beautiful things God is doing.

It seems that we left the blustery Northwest just to find a (literally) freezing Southern CA. We don't mind either. It's a blessing to have a warm apartment and friends and family in both places. We don't have bald eagles in CA, though....just lots of wonderfully green trees and little songbirds that chirp every time I open our apartment door. God is amazing in His creativity and artistry, isn't He?

Here are some more pictures from our wonderful 2-week vacation in Washington.
The waterfall that we're at is Snoqualmie Falls, which is 100 feet higher than the Niagara Falls! I've (Elizabeth) never been to waterfalls that big before. It was incredible, loud, and wet!
